Is Alkaline Water Worth It? A Balanced Look

By Jason Preston, Founder · June 2026

The short answer

Alkaline water is worth it — with an honest asterisk. The broad "detox / change your body chemistry" claims floating around the wellness world aren't well supported by science, and I'll say so plainly. But the real case for re-mineralized alkaline water is defensible and straightforward: it tastes noticeably better, it puts calcium and magnesium back into water that filtration would otherwise strip, and it does all of that without wasting a drop — unlike reverse osmosis. That's the AlkaGuard story, and it's a good one.

The question I get asked most when someone is considering a home water system: "Do I actually need alkaline water, or is that just a marketing thing?" I appreciate the skepticism. The wellness industry has been extremely loud on this topic and not always honest. So here's my honest read — including where I think the case is solid and where I think it's overblown.

What "Alkaline Water" Actually Means

Water's pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline it is, on a scale from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline), with 7 being neutral. Regular tap and bottled water usually sits around neutral. Alkaline water has a higher pH — often in the 8 to 9.5 range.

That higher pH typically comes from one of two places: natural mineral content — water that picked up calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate as it moved through rock and soil — or re-mineralization, where a filter stage adds those minerals back in and raises pH as a result. The second is what our Sentry H2O Wellness System does with its AlkaGuard stage.

What happens after you drink it, though, is where the conversation gets more complicated.

Filtration is the foundation. Re-mineralization with AlkaGuard is the upgrade — better taste and beneficial minerals, zero water waste.

The Body-pH Debate — What Science Actually Says

I'll give you the honest version: the claim that drinking alkaline water meaningfully changes your body's internal pH is not well supported by science. Your kidneys and lungs are remarkably good at keeping your blood pH in a tight, stable range — around 7.35 to 7.45 — and they do it automatically. For a healthy person, drinking a higher-pH beverage doesn't rewrite that.

Some smaller studies have looked at narrow, specific uses — alkaline water for acid reflux symptom management, or hydration in athletic recovery contexts. Those are interesting threads worth watching. But the bigger headline claims — disease prevention, detoxification, dramatic energy boosts — don't have consistent, large-scale scientific backing. I'm not going to sell you something that isn't there.1

Here's where I land: the science on body-pH changes from drinking water is genuinely debated and inconclusive. The science on adding calcium and magnesium to your water — and on what those minerals do for you — is much firmer ground. And that's exactly what re-mineralization does.

What AlkaGuard Does and Why It Matters

AlkaGuard is the fifth stage in the Sentry H2O Wellness System. By the time water reaches it, ToxyGuard has already handled the chlorine, chloramine, fluoride, VOCs, lead, and arsenic. AlkaGuard's job is to re-mineralize: it adds calcium and magnesium back into the water and raises pH to roughly 8–9.5.

The benefits here are real and defensible:

  • Taste. Mineral-rich water genuinely tastes different — smoother, less flat. When I tested my own tap water side by side with re-mineralized water, the difference wasn't subtle. If better taste is what makes you actually drink more water during the day, that's a meaningful win.
  • Calcium and magnesium. These minerals matter for bone health, muscle function, and nerve health.2 Re-mineralization puts them back in the water you're drinking every day — not as a replacement for diet, but as a consistent, low-friction way to support your intake.
  • Zero waste. AlkaGuard adds minerals without wasting water. Every drop that goes in comes out as drinking water. That matters — especially compared to reverse osmosis, which I'll get to in a moment.

None of this requires believing in any of the contested detox-or-body-pH claims. The honest case is strong enough without them.

AlkaGuard vs. Reverse Osmosis: A Real Comparison

Reverse osmosis is effective at removing contaminants, and I won't pretend otherwise. But it has real trade-offs that I think most people don't fully understand when they're shopping.

RO strips everything — including the beneficial minerals — and leaves water that tastes flat and registers as slightly acidic. Then many RO systems add a re-mineralization stage anyway, to fix the taste problem they created. On top of that, RO systems waste 3 to 5 gallons of water for every gallon they produce. That's a meaningful environmental and utility cost for treating a single tap.3

The Sentry H2O Wellness System's approach is different. Our multi-stage filtration removes contaminants without stripping minerals, then AlkaGuard adds more. The result is water that's clean, mineral-rich, and alkaline — with zero waste. It's why I think our approach makes more sense for most homes than RO does.

So, Is It Worth It? The Honest Take

Worth it for taste and minerals — skip the big health claims. If you're drinking alkaline water because of the detox or body-pH literature, I'd encourage you to hold that loosely — the evidence is thin. If you're drinking it because it tastes better and you like knowing you're getting calcium and magnesium from your water supply, that's a well-grounded reason.

Don't pay for expensive ionizers. High-end electric ionizer machines can cost thousands of dollars. They're producing the same alkaline water you get from a quality re-mineralization stage. The price difference is hard to justify. The AlkaGuard stage in the Sentry H2O Wellness System does the same job — as part of a complete 5-stage system — for a fraction of the cost.

Filtration is the foundation. Whatever you decide about alkalinity, the bigger upgrade is almost always filtration first. Removing chlorine, PFAS, and other contaminants is where most people notice the real "this tastes so much better" moment. Alkalinity is a meaningful layer on top of clean water — not a substitute for it. Start by understanding what's actually in your tap. See what's actually in your tap water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does alkaline water change my body's pH?

For a healthy person, no — not in any meaningful way. Your kidneys and lungs keep your blood pH in a tight, stable range regardless of what you drink. The body-pH-change claim is scientifically debated; the real, defensible benefits of re-mineralized alkaline water are taste, added calcium and magnesium, and not stripping those minerals out the way RO does.

What does AlkaGuard actually do?

AlkaGuard is the re-mineralization stage in the Sentry H2O Wellness System. It adds calcium and magnesium back into the filtered water and raises pH to roughly 8–9.5. You get better-tasting water and beneficial minerals — without any water waste.

How is AlkaGuard different from reverse osmosis?

Reverse osmosis strips beneficial minerals along with contaminants and wastes 3 to 5 gallons for every gallon it produces. AlkaGuard adds minerals back and operates with zero water waste. The Sentry H2O Wellness System filters first, then re-mineralizes — so you get clean water that also tastes great.

Is alkaline water safe to drink every day?

For most healthy people, yes. If you have kidney disease or another condition affecting fluid and mineral balance, check with your doctor first.

What matters more — alkalinity or filtration?

Filtration is the foundation — removing chlorine, PFAS, and other contaminants delivers the biggest improvement. Alkalinity via re-mineralization is a meaningful add-on: better taste and beneficial minerals without waste. The Sentry H2O Wellness System does both in one 5-stage under-sink system.
